Poland was always on our list to visit. Flights were always cheap! There were places like Poznan and Gdansk, which just sounds cool. We picked Krakow though, just because we had heard good things about it, and there was plenty to do there. So we went.
We went AirBnB again, and chose the Jewish Quarter, in the south of Krakow. Place looked all modern and shiny, the apartment, not Kazimierz. Got there, dumped our bags and that, and headed out. There was a fair bit of graffiti around, but not like ‘Wazza 2014’ and that, more decent stencils, or massive murals on sides of buildings. Quite cool.
Main Square
Headed to the Main Square, just as it was obviously the central place, and it looked really pretty. Millions of pigeons around. A fair few locals feeding them. Amelia obviously joined in. Food looked quite cheap, so decided to go to a Hard Rock Cafe. We’d never been before, but thought as it was cheaper than normal, we’d go. We wish we hadn’t! Wasn’t great food! Not sure if that’s whats they all taste like, or if we just had a bad one, but we wouldn’t go again! We have friends who visit them all over the world, which I think is an ace way of travelling.
Saw one of them horse and cart things which we see around a lot of the cities and thought ‘why not’. We haggled the price down, which I recommend you do in all these tourist traps. Some say it’s not very British, some say it’s expected! Go for it, save some money, as they probably inflate the prices anyway! Had a good half hour, and came down the main drag too, where we saw all sorts of things, like a man dressed in hundreds of mirrors (selling a mirror maze place), and a guy playing keyboard, wearing a horses head (not a real one).
Natural History Museum
Next day, we went to the Natural History Museum. There were pretty much no signs outside, cost a few quid to get in, and was quite strange. Old building like, with some stuffed animals, and rocks. That was about it. I wouldn’t go again.
Had a mooch around the old town again, so the obligatory man blowing massive bubbles. Some really cool market sellers with hundreds of paintings. No filter required for instagram pics! We then ended up in a bit of a demonstration. Not a clue what it was about. Was a bit worried that the Prime Minister or Mayor or whatever was gonna get overthrown, and we’d end up in Sky News and people at home would think we were involved. We weren’t, don’t worry.
Krakow Castle
Went to Krakow Castle, which was pretty cool. Right by the river Wisla, or Vistula depending where you’re from. Best bit was a cast iron dragon at the bottom, which breathes fire every now and then! If you didn’t know about it, you’d get a bit of a fright, like a few people did that we saw!
Walking south of our apartment, we crossed a bridge. Some love locks on it, and some statues of acrobats and that. I had seen this thing on Trip Advisor which intrigued me – a mound. Just a big mound. There’s a few around apparently, but this was the closest, so we went. Bit of a walk, I won’t lie. Stan was still in pushchair which helped. We climbed up it, and had a good view of Krakow.
On the way back, we stopped at a monument square thing. It had loads of chairs in it. It’s called Plac Bohaterow Getta, or Ghetto Heroes Square., commemorating Jews from Krakow. This was one of my biggest regrets, not going to Auschwitz. Obviously, couldn’t take the kids, so I would have had to have gone on my own, but didn’t want to eave Char with the kids all day. Just gives us an excuse to go back soon! Also, want to see the Salt Mines! Everyone I know that has been really recommends it, therefore we will defo return.
Zoo
Went to the zoo, standard. It was ok I suppose. Actually, the worst bit about it was, we went there on the last day, after checking out our accommodation. Plan was to go there for a few hours, then head to the airport. So we had all our bags, which the zoo dudes let us keep in a weird hut at the entrance, which didn’t seem too safe. Zoo was cheap to get in, enclosures quite small. Best bit was the petting zoo bit. There was a guy there whose job was to cut carrots and give them to us to feed the goats and that. What a cool job!
We had used Uber to get to the zoo. It’s a bit out of the way, and also up a massive hill thing. Turns out that when we wanted to leave, there were no Uber available! Buses weren’t coming up, and no taxis were available, even when we asked the main desk to call us one. Bonkers. Unnecessary stress to the end of our trip.
All in all, a good trip. We ate pizza a lot as could feed us all for about £12! Mega cheap, people were nice, and would happily go back again. Thanks Krakow, you were cracking, etc.
